Cryotherapy was first pioneered in the 19th century as a way to destroy diseased tissue and treat skin, lesions, using extreme cold; becoming broadly adopted by the dermatological medical world due to it’s effectiveness in quickly and efficiently clearing these safe, but irritating,often unsightly lesions with minimal downtime and scarring. Once only available as a medical treatment, new advanced and highly precise tools and methods have made the benefits of Cryotherapy available for cosmetic procedures. Letting comprehensively trained and well-experienced practitioners like myself use an FDA-approved clinical-grade Cryopen to freeze and remove benign skin lesions, with precision.
What does Cryopen Cryotherapy do?
Skin lesions on our body, particularly on visible areas, may not be dangerous, but can have a massive impact on how we see and feel about ourselves, and let’s face it some of these pesky things are pretty unsightly and irritating, no one ever said “that’s an attractive wart on the side of your nose.” Benign skin lesions and blemishes had been historically available for treatment on the NHS. However, they are now viewed as a cosmetic treatment and generally, no longer available on the NHS.
CryoPen by Ivamed, which is the pen I use, is a modern FDA approved device: it’s a small, pen-like device delivering an ultra-cold precise jet of high-pressure nitrous oxide gas directly into the lesions allowing their removal safely and effectively. In the right hands it can safely treat lesions with extreme precision (from 1mm-10mm in size) even on very delicate areas (e.g eye lids). It delivers powerful precise pressure, effectively treating the lesion with pinpoint accuracy, minimal discomfort without damaging the healthy tissue around it and with minimal downtime. Treatments are extremely fast, seconds, often one treatment is enough, particularly when treating skin tags (warts can be more stubborn), delicate areas require a lighter freeze and may need more than one treatment, however this will determined on an individual basis, and check up treatments are scheduled two weeks after initial treatment.
What does it treat?
Cryotherapy can treat most common benign skin lesions including , sun damage (pigmentation), warts, skin tags, verrucas, cherry angiomas, Seborrheic Keratosis, milia, hemangioma, contagiosum and many more.
How does it work?
CryoTherapy uses liquified nitrous oxide (sub zero, so very cold!) to destroy unwanted tissue by freezing the liquids in skin cells. As the cell-fluid freezes, it turns into shards, which rupture the cell membrane, destroying the cell and lesion. This occurs in seconds starting with one quick freeze (between 5 and 15 seconds), followed by a 30 second thaw and second short freeze.
Will it hurt
Once the cold is deep enough to penetrate the lesion (seconds), you may feel a slight sting, at this point the treatment stops. You may feel a residual stinging sensation for a couple of minutes after the treatment, but this soon subsides.
What will happen after the treatment?
For a period of between 7-14 days and potentially up to 4 weeks, scabbing, darkening of lesion, warmth around treated area, blistering and redness may, but not always occur. If it does apply soothing gel, sun protection cream and avoid (however tempted), picking, scratching applying heat or friction to the area. And be aware sometimes these unwanted lesions just drop off, which can be a little alarming, but perfectly normal, others break down slowly.
Conclusion
CryoTherapy offers fast, safe and effective treatment for skin lesions of many types when performed by a trained professional, in a safe, hygienic environment using FDA approved equipment. It is worth noting that some lesions including moles, will need GP approval prior to treatment.
